Heat Wave Strikes New Zealand

In this weeks blog, I will be talking about extreme weathers. Extreme weather is any unusual severe or unseasonal weather. There are various types of extreme weather; such as thunderstorms, heatwaves, and tornadoes. Unfortunately, for my country it is not common to have any of these types of extreme weather. A common extreme weather in Fiji that you’ll see are cyclone. Since, I cannot write on cyclones this week, I have decided to research heat waves in New Zealand.

On January 29, 2018 a heatwave had struck New Zealand so harshly that it was sparking health alerts. During this time, the temperature of New Zealand was ranged between 35-40 degrees Celsius(95-104 degrees Fahrenheit). In New Zealand it is very rare to get to temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius. With this heatwave being a week long, New Zealand actually experienced a shortage of fans due to people’s attempt in trying to keep them cool. However, the heatwave caused the most impact on school children. The schools are built to have heaters, but not air conditioning, making it challenging and unsafe for children to go to school. According to a meteorologist named Ben Noll, a major factor of this heatwave was unusual sea temperatures, which causes the land to experience a rise in temperature.

  2. Hi there Sharon,

My name is Jessica, and I just wanted to say that I liked your post on the extreme heat waves that happened in New Zealand. When I think of New Zealand, I would never imagine that it experiences heat waves over there, it seems like a cool/chill country. But I guess we learn something new everyday, don't we. I cant believe that they experienced such a crazy heat wave this year! That is so recent! Must have been hard for the citizens of New Zealand to have dealt with such unusual weather. Hopefully by this crazy heat waves, New Zealand finds new ways to install air conditioners in classrooms for next time.

Great job on your post! Cant wait to continue reading your posts.
